• "America, we've had enough!"

Still on the middle of the Cold War, there was a high amount of communists in France that were opposed to the American imperialism that dominated an empire by the spread of their ideology. Many communists in France resisted while American led by Senator Joe McCarthy, attempted to rid of the world of Communism. Their main goal of the was to prevent France and Paris from being integrated into the Western unification. An anti-Americanism sentiment started to grow more and more in France especially about their political ideology. The intervention of the United States in the Vietnam war was really controversial because the French did not support the American troops in South Vietnam  that used violence to avoid a war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. In 1973, the President Nixon ordered the withdrawal of the American troops from Vietnam. It is a failure for America that shows a weakness of this big power.

In 1958, the President De Gaulle came back at the head of France and demonstrated a strong anti-Americanism sentiment by the withdrawal of France from NATO’s (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) integrated military and leadership structures, in 1966, because De Gaulle refused to allow the French armed forces to submit to US command. It was the middle of the Cold War and the fact that “La Grande nation”, which had just become a nuclear power, was going it alone was perceived as a destabilizing maneuver.

In the 1950’s, America became a socio-economic and cultural model for France and was considered as the prototype of a consumption society. But at the same time, it was a threat to France’s culture. The American Dream was present in the United States, as well as in France, but soon we can talk about an anti-Americanization sentiment in France that is represented by the reject of the spread of Coca-Cola in France. Moreover, the president De Gaulle withdrawn from NATO that showed the want of France to become more independent, without and American Control. But this sentiment is going to get better in the next years.
